After watching a record breaking 123 films in theaters in 2019, the world changed in 2020 due to the Chinese Virus and theaters were shut down for much of the year. Despite not being able to go to the movie theater for months, I was still able to see 65 films in theaters, three more movies than the amount I saw in theaters in 2018 due to 2018 being extremely busy on a personal level. 65 movies isn’t that low all things considered but living in a smarter state like Arizona meant I was able to safely go to the theater while other states had their theaters still shut down. With the extra time of not going to theaters I watched and reviewed an epic 55 Netflix original films in addition to several other films on other streaming platforms. All that in addition to the TV shows I reviewed meant that despite theaters being shuttered, I had no shortage of material to review for this site and expanded the streaming platforms from which I now review.
2020 ended up being a rather disappointing year for film overall although some of the films that I think had the potential to make 2020 a great year were delayed to 2021 so that was partially to blame. Seven of my top ten most anticipated films of 2020 were pushed to 2021. With some seemingly great films delayed to 2021 plus all of the newer movies that were scheduled for release in 2021 anyways means that I’m expecting my list next year to be much stronger in terms of quality (none of my films in 2020 reviewed higher than a 9/10). That being said, there was still plenty of great and terrible films that came out in 2020 so let’s take a look at what to watch and what to avoid…
*NOTE* I’m using the calendar year 2020 for these films and not what the Academy used as they counted their 2020 year as January 1st 2020 through February 28th 2021 for Oscar consideration. Hence why you won’t see some Oscar nominated films on this list but you will see them potentially on next year’s list if they were released between January 1st 2021 and February 28th 2021 (i.e.- “The Father”, “Judas and the Black Messiah”).
