21 Bridges

6/10 I had fairly low expectations for “21 Bridges” due to its mediocre trailers and lackluster critical reception. I was pleasantly surprised that although this is a rather bland, forgettable movie that I still found myself enjoying it. The story is nothing new that we haven’t seen before. There are some really cheesy lines of dialogue. The plot takes several predictable turns. Even the talented Chadwick Boseman can’t quite pull off his accent in the movie. The cast is full of heavy hitters yet the material seems somewhat below them all. A certain female character always seems to show up at the most convenient moments in order to advance the plot. This is especially mind boggling in a scene near the end on a subway. Even our lead character, who gets a brief backstory flashback, is a rather boring character with no real development throughout the course of the movie. The score is utterly forgettable and the direction is mostly vanilla. All that being said, this movie still has some fun to offer. The pacing is solid, the movie embraces with R rating with strong action scenes, most of the cast does the best job they can do with the script given to them (Taylor Kitsch stands out the most), the movie is genuinely enjoyable to watch unfold, the production and costume design get the job done, there are a couple of suspenseful moments that work well, the movie isn’t afraid to kill characters off, which I am always a fan of, etc. When all is said and done, this movie falls just above the “average” markings, where you don’t need to see it on the big screen, but it is definitely worth a rental/stream if you have a couple of hours to kill. Although the plot takes a different path from the recent “Black and Blue”, this movie is way better so if you are considering between two recent police dramas/action movies, then “21 Bridges” is the easy choice. Even though there are a plethora of movies in the “good cop rooting out corruption in his department” genre, this fun, disposable movie will suffice if you keep your expectations in check.
